What Types of Diving Activities Are There?

Many people are not very familiar with the differences between various "diving activities," as many different diving modes are simply referred to as diving. In fact, each diving activity uses different ways to interact with the ocean. Let us help you distinguish the commonly seen diving types.

Snorkeling

Snorkeling involves wearing a life jacket or relying on flotation devices, along with equipment such as a mask, snorkel, and fins. Participants float on the sea surface, facing downwards to admire underwater scenery. It has a relatively low learning curve and cost, making it one of the easiest ways to get started with underwater exploration, whether in terms of equipment use or technique.

  • Diving depth: Sea level.
  • Diving equipment: Uses the "snorkeling trio" (mask, snorkel, fins).
  • Suitable for: Friends new to water activities, suitable for both adults and children. Some operators can accommodate children as young as 3 years old for participation in the activity.

Helmet Diving

Helmet diving, also known as sea walking, involves participants walking into the water from a boat. Upon entering the water, staff assist in placing a heavy helmet over your head. An air supply is provided through a hose extending from the boat to the helmet, allowing you to breathe underwater. Participants do not need to wear additional equipment, but activities are restricted to the length of the air supply hose from the boat.

  • Diving depth: Varies depending on the local marine environment, typically within 6 meters.
  • Diving equipment: Diving helmet.
  • Suitable for: Friends new to water activities, suitable for both adults and children. Ideal for those who prefer not to learn extensive diving techniques and who are interested in other activities available on board.

Freediving

Freediving is a form of diving where divers do not use scuba tanks for underwater exploration. Divers learn specialized breathing techniques and it's a challenging sport that pushes personal limits. Freedivers typically use low-volume masks, long-blade fins, weights for buoyancy control, and a freediving buoy. Freediving allows for greater freedom since it lacks the bulk of scuba gear and tanks. In recent years, it has become popular for capturing beautiful underwater photos using freediving or mermaid costumes. There are also certification levels in freediving, emphasizing safety protocols and selecting appropriate dive sites based on individual skill levels.

  • Diving depth: Varied depending on the diver's skill level.
  • Diving equipment: Mask/snorkel/fins/weights/freediving buoy.
  • Suitable for: Individuals who prefer not to be restricted by heavy equipment and enjoy challenging their personal limits.

Scuba Diving

Scuba diving involves divers wearing underwater breathing apparatus and tanks, allowing them to explore the ocean for extended periods. In addition to the basic gear like mask and fins, divers use regulators and buoyancy control devices such as buoyancy compensators. The full set of gear including tanks and weights typically weighs around 15 to 20 kilograms. While walking on land in this gear can be cumbersome, once underwater, divers can effortlessly float, slow down, and explore the sea, feeling immersed in nature. This form of diving is suitable for various bodies of water including oceans, lakes, and even ice fields. Besides recreational purposes, scuba diving is used for activities like marine research, underwater photography, and engineering projects.

  • Diving depth: For introductory dives, depths are typically limited to around 8 meters for safety, while certified divers can explore depths up to 40 meters depending on their training and certification.
  • Diving equipment: Mask, snorkel, wetsuit/drysuit, fins, regulators, buoyancy compensator, weights, tanks.
  • Suitable for: Minimum age typically starts at 12 years old. It's ideal for those who want to explore the underwater world, enjoy observing marine life, and seek to escape from everyday worries and noise.

Can You Dive Without Knowing How to Swim?

"Can you scuba dive if you can't swim?" This is a common question among many people. In fact, swimming skills are not directly related to scuba diving with an air tank. Many scuba divers actually do not know how to swim. Of course, having basic swimming skills can be beneficial. However, scuba diving relies on breathing equipment for underwater respiration, unlike swimming which requires regular breathing. Scuba diving underwater also involves moving slowly and primarily using fins for propulsion, unlike swimming where hands are used for strokes. Therefore, whether or not you can swim does not necessarily affect your ability to learn scuba diving successfully! Even if you are afraid of water and want to try scuba diving, it's possible with the breathing apparatus underwater. With good practice and adaptation, it's possible to overcome fears and explore the underwater world.

In conclusion, my sincere advice is for anyone unfamiliar with scuba diving, whether they can swim or not, to first experience it and then decide whether to pursue scuba diving certification.
